Kurri Kurri Located approximately 11 km from Cessnock, Kurri Kurri is an old coalmining town. Coal was discovered in 1856 but the pits began to close from the late 1950s when wine slowly supplanted coal as the core contributor to the regional economy. In 1972 an aluminium smelter was completed and is still a primary industry for local employment. The town has over 40 murals showcasing the areas history, heritage and uniqueness. Visitors can come by bus or by car to see the magnificent murals and undertake a tour by a local guide. Kurri Kurri Visitor Information Centre - Ph: 4936 1909 www.kurrikurri.com

Galleries and Theatres in the Hunter Region
Whats on at the Galleries this month
Cessnock Regional Art Gallery September Exhibition Ends 5th September 2010
Our Place
A Journey through Four Corners of the Hunter Valley
This exhibition of artwork by Hunter artists Jacqui White, Linda Greedy, Pamela Ireland and Pamela Fitzsimons celebrates their connections to the land – specifically their experience of life in the Hunter Valley from Bow Wow Creek to Pokolbin, Cessnock to the shores of Lake Macquarie. Each brings a unique vision of life in the valley to their works, as well as the limits of their chosen art medium from textile works which feature natural dyes, layering, machine and hand stitching to painting from the abstract to more detailed observations of nature in birds, flowers and plants. All works are for sale.
Maitland Regional Art Gallery presents
21st August - 10th October
In [two] art
Thirty pairs of artist couples have been selected for the exhibition, including Alun Leach-Jones and Nola Jones; Clare Healy and Sean Cordeiro; Rick Amor and Meg Williams; Helen Eagar and Christopher Hodges; John Turier and Nicola Hensel; and Deborah Paauwe and Mark Kimber. The diversity of practice, medium and style on display in in [two] art, supported by an extensive catalogue for the exhibition, is enough to promise a diverse and fascinating visit to MRAG. www.mrag.org.au
Smiling faces from the children of the Hunter
Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) presents the exhibition FACES which was developed as a project open to students from Kindergarten to Year 10 and involved schools from the broad footprint of the Hunter and Central Coast Regions. Students were encouraged to research contemporary portraiture in art practice. The exhibition FACES shows insight into the characters of these artists and demonstrates a diverse and interesting ‘sense of self’ from artists ranging in age from as young as 5 years old and up to the early teens. Also opening with the exhibition FACES will be three new exhibitions from nationally significant artists. Suzanne Archer: After life, an exhibition of recent painting and sculptures; an exhibition of new work by Geraldine Berkemeier; Gary Shinfield: On the Hunter and a touring exhibition by Ruth Downes: Tea for the Trades. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to attend the opening and enjoy the hospitality of refreshments provided by Mansfield’s catering and Tyrrell’s wine. The exhibitions open 3pm from Sat 18 September until 14 November except Tea for the Trades which will finish 31 October 2010.
