Festivals and Events in the Hunter Region
Dates for your Diary - Upcoming Events
Newcastle Maritime Festival 2012 25th January 2012
The first Newcastle Harbour Regatta was held in 1834, consisting mainly of sailing events. By the turn of the 19th century the Newcastle Harbour Regatta had become the major sporting festival for the town.
Today, 24 years on, the festival exists to raise awareness of our wonderful, foreshore museum and the history of our seafaring ancestors. For many, celebrating the Australia Day National Maritime Festival doesn’t get much better than getting together with friends and family to relax and enjoy a day out on the harbour foreshore and beautiful beaches that Newcastle is renowned for. The Newcastle Maritime Centre and Festival brings together the community to share and celebrate our rich maritime heritage that makes our region so unique.
For over 25 years the National Maritime Festival has provided a link between maritime heritage and the community. The new Australia Day National Maritime Festival has developed to tell the story of Australia through our relationship with sea. The event provides a grand canvas reflecting the history of our nation as a whole and has the potential to develop into an attraction of National and International significance. Events like the participants in citizenship ceremonies being delivered to the wharves where immigrant vessels used to dock and a harbour lights spectacular make it an event that attracts both local and national media attention.
A new piece of song and theatre is set to stun onlookers when it premieres on Australia Day Eve, 25 January 2012! This unique show will celebrate the romance and challenges experienced by all those touched by life at sea and will be part of the two day Australia Day Maritime Festival and free family fun, that includes a spectacular fireworks display, the Stockton Cross Harbour Swim, Ducks for Dollars fundraiser, Hunter Wetlands Canoe Race, RAN Orchestra, fighter jet fly pasts, Newcastle Port Corporation harbour tours, National Ski Racing, jet-ski trials, Tug Boat Ballet with Baby Ballerinas, market stalls, face painting, boat building, nautical games, carnival activities and a Pirate Muster! AND so much more!!

Galleries and Theatres in the Hunter Region
What's On this month in the Galleries
Fathom the Depths 9 December 2011 – 5 February 2012 Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery
Where there is water … …there is Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. ‘Nestled as we are on the foreshore of this country’s largest coastal saltwater lake, overlooking an active marina,’ it impossible not to consider water an ongoing theme in our programming,’ says Gallery Director Debbie Abraham. ‘The changing weather reflected in the lake’s surface each day, visitors’ delight in the splendour of the site, the yachts sailing by, and the deep sense of its Aboriginal significance, always remind us of where we are.’
Curated by Meryl Ryan, Where there is water…brings together 11 contemporary artists whose works explore the theme of water from diverse perspectives and using a wide range of media, from photography and digital video to sculptural installation, painting and printmaking. These artists examine their relationship with this mesmerizing subject, often using it as a metaphor to describe human emotion and states of being.
Through thought-provoking works by artists Narelle Autio, Deidre Brollo, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Julia Ciccarone, Shaun Gladwell, Helga Groves, Jess MacNeil, Todd McMillan, Harry Nankin, Bill Viola, and Wukun Wanambi, the exhibition holds something for everyone.
Colours of the Country II Maitland Regional Art Gallery
Artback NT are proud to be touring another fabulous exhibition. The beanie is an icon of Australian headwear and has been celebrated by the Alice Springs Beanie Festival since 1996. This collection demonstrates the imagination, creativity and fine craftsmanship presented in each piece. The collection also highlights the works produced by Indigenous artists from the Central Desert region. The exhibition will inspire audiences to laugh, don crazy headwear and bring out those knitting needles all over again. Colours of the Country II opens along with 4 other exciting new exhibitions and will be on view throughout the Summer holidays. In addition to Colours of the Country you can also see A Hector Tjupuru Burton Initiative 2011- artwork by Indigenous artists from the AMATA region of north western South Australia, Lifestyles of the neither rich nor famous by LUCY BARKER, A Corridor of Keelers, LEWIS MORLEY and Dreamweavers a touring exhibition from Gippsland Art Gallery and NETS Victoria. What's On this month in the Theatre
John Waters in “Looking Through a Glass Onion” 28th January, 8pm Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre
In 1992, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta took to the small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Sydney with their debut production of “Looking Through A Glass Onion”. What was an initially a one week booking quickly sold out and extended into a six week, sell out season. Fast forward 20 years and after many successful and sold out Glass Onion tours, John and Stewart have decided to return to their ‘up close and personal’ intimate 2 man show tour commencing in January 2012.
“This is a last chance opportunity for regional Australia to see this show as we’ll be taking it to Broadway in New York in 2013 and are in discussion with Yoko Ono on aspects of the New York shows”, says John Waters. “Although we’ve done two tours with the full band we were constantly inundated with requests from areas we had yet to tour to come and perform, so we’ve yielded to the call and decided to go back out of the road with the original 2 Man show” cites Waters.
The show is not a cut-and-paste biography of Lennon or an emulation of the original recordings. It’s part concert and part biography, though it doesn’t seek to tell the full story of Lennon’s life. Rather than impersonate it is intended to evoke Lennon’s honesty, bitter-sweet humour, self criticism and disdain for pretentiousness and pomposity. The song Glass Onion was John Lennon’s postscript to The Beatles.
An emotional trip down memory lane and a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icons of our time. With 31 songs performed including, ‘A Day in the Life’, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds’, ‘Woman’, ‘Jealous Guy’, ‘Imagine’ and more, this is a show for all ages. Adults $55, Pensioner/Student $50.
