Big Band Festival Returns to Bowral
Bowral Chamber of Commerce has decided to bring back its Big Band Festival after a lapse of some 75 years. The festival will be held in the beautiful Corbett Gardens of Bowral on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st March. Several bands will be playing over the two days from 12.30pm to 4.30pm in the Harry Springett Rotunda which is located in the centre of the gardens. The Australian Army Band, the oldest professional music organisation in Australia, will head up the list of bands which also includes the NSW Police Band, NSW Corrective Services Band, the Wollongong Brass Band and the Southern Highlands Concert Band to name a few. The NSW Police Band boasts that it is the longest standing concert band in Australia. It was established in 1895. This band engages in high profile activities and has performed for many Royal occasions, two Papal visits, Presidents of America and China as well as Head of State and dignatories from virtually every nation of the world. This will be a true family outing and admission is free. Food and refreshments will also be available. Another attraction on display will be one of the drums that was used by one of the Mittagong band members that led the way over Sydney Harbour bridge at its official opening. People will need to bring their own seating and blankets for this occasion. Patron of the event will be former Channel Nine Music Director Geoff Harvey while the Master of Ceremonies for both days will be Radio personality Graeme Day. If inclement weather prevails then the Festival will be moved into the Bowral Memorial Hall.
